This course is about beginning your life as a professional counselor; beginning what might be a life-long practice with clients.
With supervision you will have the chance to work independently with clients in a professional capacity. As you do so you will:
- Engage in weekly seminars with your peers and faculty supervisor.
- Receive weekly supervision from your on-site supervisor.
- Interact weekly with clients professionally as a counselor.
- Share your experience and difficulties, and learn from your fellow students’ experiences.
During this experience you will carry your own caseload of clients. You should gain the experience of conducting client intakes, assessing client needs, determining an appropriate diagnosis, and preparing a treatment plan. You should also learn how to prepare progress and discharge notes. Given the setting, you might also gain experience working with billing and insurance companies and other administrative responsibilities of working in an agency.
Finally, during one of your internships, you will prepare and conduct a formal case presentation.
When you have completed your internships, you should be ready for your initial level of licensure and for your initial work as professional counselor working under supervision.
